Ask the Readers: Bleached or Unbleached Flour

So, I was at Walmart this week and used my $0.75 Gold Medal flour coupons. I typically buy bleached flour just because, well, that is what my mom always bought and so I do too. However, I noticed that the unbleached flour was the exact same price so I bought it thinking that skipping the bleaching process has got to make the flour healthier and I'm all for anything that is healthier for my family.

But when I got home, I started wondering if I made a bad decision. What if it makes my food, particularly my baked stuff turn out weird? I assume I use the same amount as usual, but am not really certain.

And so, I decided to turn to you all and see if you have any experience or knowledge about the subject. Do you use unbleached flour the same as bleached? Does it make baked things get weird? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Well I know that I accidentally bought it one time and it did kinda make my stuff not turn out how it used to and I threw the rest away.I almost think you have to add some extra ingredient to make things good ....maybe other people have had a good experience though.~Susan

  2. Don't worry! I use unbleached flour all the time and my stuff turns out!!! It's all I use!

  3. Unbleached is all I use. I have never had a problem. ---Aldi's flour is not good, my stuff does not turn out with that stuff.

  4. I really doubt you'll notice a difference! At least I don't. I switched to unbleached a few years ago just to avoid extra chemicals. I've never noticed a difference. I didn't even think it looked that much less "white" then bleached. Since I'm on a bread baking binge this winter, I've been interested to read several bread baking "experts" recommend unbleached flour for better results. Let us know how it works for you!

  5. That's what I use. It works fine.

  6. Thanks so much ladies! I really appreciated all the feedback. I think I am going to try the unbleached flour and see what I think. I'll keep you posted! :)
